I'm spending eternity overlooking my tribe's scared grounds on the McSween ranch. Mostly I watch the fool white people. Like Rosa. Rosa's the meanest white woman I've ever seen. But Bella's no better, bitching at members of her family because she's pissed off at her husband. She works up a lather in all those revival meetings, and she latches on to the handsome preacher man. I'm glad for her husband when he chases after the pretty widow. Man deserves some peace in his lodge. I saw what caused Maria's nightmares, and know why her spirit stays angry. Holding up to brutal weather while keeping the livestock safe is the easy part of ranching. Guilt over the dead sumbitch, and quick tempers plus strong wills make this generation of McSweens look forward to the hard work. Maybe the music making and his love for Maria will help Rod McSween leave the whiskey in the bottle. Some of these white people see me for an instant, some feel my presence, but all know my spirit is with them. They call me Chief. When they ask, I help them over the next hump.
