World War II has ended. Melissa Warum anticipates normal life with the return of her husband Gunner from North Africa. Her three year old son Jamie has never known his Dad and wonders about him. The family is settling into their new life together when a strange sailor knocks on the door. George Benson, fresh out of the Navy, is Gunner's shady nephew. George has no family and quickly insinuates himself into the Warum family. He takes a sexual interest in Melissa who tries to get rid of him. He hints that Gunner has a dark secretive past. Melissa ignores that charge and pushes Gunner to throw George out. Gunner is oddly hesitant and refuses to see impending danger. Roland makes an arrangement that stymies the investigation but permits both Roland and Gunner to pursue their separate but equally sick desires. The effect on Jamie and Melissa is devastating, leading to severe emotional disorders and powerful medical treatments. Decades later another stranger arrives. Peter Cadby at the end of his own rope, befriends both Melissa and Jamie. He mentors Jamie (now a young man) and encourages him to write his experiences and dreams. Together, the threesome piece together the shattered past and bring some measure of peace to their very troubled souls.
