Romola

Romola, novel by George Eliot, first published in 1862-63 in The Cornhill Magazine. The book was published in three volumes in 1863. Set in Florence at the end of the 15th century and scrupulously researched, the novel weaves into its plot the career of the reformer Girolamo Savonarola and the downfall of the ruling Medicis. In the narrative, Tito, a handsome but scheming Greek opportunist, marries Romola, the daughter of a scholar. He deceives Romola, is unscrupulous in his political dealings, and is finally killed by his adoptive father. Romola finds strength in helping to care for Tito's other wife and the children of that union. The novel suggests that the highest moral imperative and the reason for living, when all has been lost, is human sympathy.
