The story begins before the birth of White Fang, with two men and their team of sled dogs who are traveling to deliver a coffin in a remote town called Fort McGurry, located in the upper part of the Yukon Territory, Canada. The men, Bill and Henry, are harassed by a large pack of hungry wolves for several days. Finally, after all the dogs have been eaten by the wolves and Bill in a fit of madness chases the wolf who was leading the wolves at the time of the attack, four sleds find Henry trying to escape from the wolves; the herd disperses upon hearing the large group of people arriving. Then the story centers on the herd, which has had the last prey taken from him. When the herd manages to hunt and kill a moose, the famine is over; the pack will be divided and now the story will focus on a wolf and her companion, Tuerto. The she-wolf gives birth to a litter of five cubs near the Mackenzie River, of which four starve to death and only one survives.
