The country is changing and Natasha, an artist, gets the idea to paint the bigger picture but her depiction of an overworked, increasingly manufactured world is dark and menacing and she struggles for recognition. Ed is a craftsman, a hopeless drifter, whose only real purpose is to avoid work which he does by living as cheaply as possible. Clemence, an economics graduate, turns his back on the City to write the great novel and ends up living on the street. He survives by busking. Andy, a natural comic, Jigsaw, a would be businessman, and Pogget, a petty thief, are three unemployed scousers. They aren't looking for work either, they just want to get the hell out, away from Liverpool and out of the clutches of job club. Six separate characters all looking for a different life. But after a search for fulfilment spanning over two decades do any of them really end up where they want to be. Exit: No Exit is a novel about who we are and what we want to be. And what we are becoming.
