I had just finished my studies in Oxford and was taking a short break from work before finally taking over the management of the estate. My father died when I was still a child; my mother followed him within a year; and I was almost as alone in the world as a man could be. I knew little of the history of my ancestors. Almost the only thing I knew about them was that a significant number of them had been assigned to the company. Until now I myself had inherited the tendency to devote a good part of my time, however, I confess, in a somewhat occasional way, to the physical sciences.
