Adam Bede was the first novel written by the British George Eliot (whose real name was Mary Ann Evans). The novel has remained in print ever since and has been used as a source for 19th century English literature studies.1 2According to The Oxford Companion for English Literature (1967), "The plot is based on a story told to George Eliot by his aunt Elizabeth Evans, a Methodist preacher, and the real Dinah Morris in the novel, where a young woman confessed to having committed infanticide."
