When Ben Palmer's mother is killed in a tragic road accident, Ben loses his way in life. He scrapes through college with no aspirations or plans beyond spending the summer bumming around the Greek Islands. All that changes after a trip to London. He is on the down escalator at Waterloo Station when he glances up and sees his mother going in the opposite direction, very much alive and well. But this is another version of his mother. Replacing the frumpy and introverted school teacher is a new version, younger, more fashionable, more sophisticated.... Euphoric, Ben tells the world the good news. But the world is not listening and one by one his family and his friends desert him. His euphoria turns to doubt and his doubt turns to despair as one door after another slams shut in his face. But with each slamming door a new one opens and the mystery deepens. Whether alive or dead his mother is not the person that he believes her to be. The further Ben is dragged into the past the greater the danger he faces. Haunted by surreal and disturbing dreams about his mother Ben Palmers belief system is shaken to its foundations. All he grew up believing in is a lie and he has to find out why.
