This is a public domain document. General Washington's most trusted companions during the war were the aides-de-camp. Over thirty people served in this capacity during the war, including the Marquis de Lafayette. The correspondence of two of Washington's aides, William Grayson and Tench Tilghman are included in this volume. William Grayson helped support Washington during the beginning of the War for Independence, later becoming a military leader and a statesman. Tench Tilghman served longer than any other aide, and spent countless hours transcribing letters from General Washington. Indeed, we would not have so many of the letters of Washington to Jefferson, Henry, Lafayette, or other leaders, were it not for the steady hand of Tench Tilghman. This volume explores the correspondence between the General of the Continental Army and two of his most trusted supporters during the war.
