In this novel of political and economic misfortunes Udeme Kojo; second son of the Kojo family is born a couple of years before his country the imaginary republic of Delta becomes independent. From the first military coup to the civil war, to an era of mismanagement and corruption by the politicians. The return of the khaki boys takes Delta back into an era of darkness, despair and poverty. Power eventually goes back to the political class, even then there is no respite for the masses as the government introduces very repressive economic reforms while nothing is done to combat fraud, crime and embezzlement by government officials in ministries and parastatals while producing RICH RULERS AND POOR NATION.. Deltans are the hapless victims of insensitive governments. After almost forty years of independence Delta is still politically and economically backward, the big crawling baby in diapers and Udeme is not spared either as this negative trend affects his life adversely.
