Have you ever prayed for your youth to return to you as you grow older? Would your life be any different if someone gave you those years of youth? Lewis is nearing the end of his life; his health deteriorates almost daily and he spends more time traveling to doctors than resting. This particular day he is traveling on a New York subway train to visit his heart specialist when a young black man sits next to him on the train. The young man is dressed in workman's clothing and Lewis supposes he works in construction. When the young man speaks to him and then knows his name, Lewis starts to take note, but then the young man takes his hand and leads him to a park and they sit on a park bench and they talk; the young man is a messenger from God. He offers Lewis a new life but as a black man and when Lewis asks what would God need in repayment, the young man asks only for him to spread the word of God. Lewis thinks for a while before he agrees, and his soul joins with that of the young black man and they become one; the young black man's name is also Lewis and both of them had died that day when the subway train derailed in the tunnels under New York. The book tells 16 short stories of people Lewis is sent to help; stories based on the social problems of a large city with a large homeless population and is set during the New York City winters. This book can feel highly religious at times, but it is written by the author as the feelings he has about religion; social justice and how he believes true Christians should act; his thoughts and beliefs. The Author is not a religious man as such; he believes in the soul and reincarnation of the soul but cannot believe in Blind Faith. However, in saying that, the author still believes in Prayer and God; but not in recognized religion.
