The message in this informational text is simple. This book is written with the specific purpose of creating an explicit lesson objective and breaking down Academic Language into understandable chunks with guiding questions and answers to those questions. Teachers, along with pre-service teachers (student teachers, resident students), will simply 'get it' after reading this brief text. The "3F" Method illustrates how to write any lesson objective, with simplicity, to meet the academic language demands within the lesson. The "3F" Method will also assist the students. As you strive to create a classroom culture of academic talk, you will be teaching students to 'write and talk' with purpose. Within the pedagogical schema of education, academic language is embedded in lesson plans, assessments, teacher evaluations, pre-service teacher evaluations, classrooms (all grade levels and all content areas), conferences, and the beat goes on. Strategically teaching the academic language demands (function, form, and fluency - the 3F Words), with specific attention to the language content and student needs, will reward all stakeholders. Create, Implement, and Assess - your power is in the LESSON OBJECTIVE. My educational background consists of 32 years as a public school teacher. I taught an additional 8 years at the university level to those 'beginning' the path toward becoming educators and professional seminar classes to those who were 'approaching the end' of their college career (pre-service candidates/student teachers/ residents). Pedagogic activities should be planned and implemented with this principle in mind: "Do this if it enables students to learn." Acquisition of knowledge and student learning is enhanced when teachers are adept at planning FOR student learning. The 3F Method conforms well with this principle.
