This is a novel about survival. As the story begins, Norway has been occupied by Nazi Germany for almost five years. A family of three, a father, a mother and a small child are forced to leave a small town in northern Norway and flee across the mountain to Sweden. The father has been working for the Norwegian resistance but now the Germans have discovered his activities and are out to catch him. Fleeing to neutral Sweden is the only option for him and his family. The Germans are not the family's only challenge. As they are crossing the mountains, extreme winter weather with biting winds and temperatures of -20F and colder presents a new threat to their lives.
