The story starts offevolved in an observatory, where an astronomer notices that Mars, older than Earth, has skilled an unexpected drop off in sea stages and temperature. Its population seek a way off in their planet on the way to live to tell the tale these modifications, and that they obtain this by way of firing themselves off of Mars in canisters. From Earth, one most effective sees sudden explosions on the surface of Mars, but this fascinates the scientific network. One canister lands near the narrator's home. It opens and a Martian comes out. It is nearly the scale of a endure and greyish with large eyes and tentacles. The Martians dislike Earth's ecosystem and retreat back into the canister. A human delegation, along with the astronomer, procedures whilst waving the white flag of peace. The Martians vaporize the humans with a Heat Ray before continuing to bring together their equipment. The British army arrives, and the entire small city of Woking is caught in a traumatic standoff. After receiving heavy fire from the navy, the Heat Ray abruptly erupts. The narrator takes his spouse to a neighboring city, hoping that she can be safer there. He returns to Woking to return a cart, however a new Martian weapon forces him to crash. The Martians have constructed Tripods-brutal, 3-legged robots, manned by means of Martians. Each has a heat ray and a chemical weapon, called Black Smoke. These Tripods speedy spoil most of the military and Woking, leaving wreckage in their wake. An artilleryman warns the narrator that any other canister has landed nearby, which separates the narrator from his spouse.
