Bella, a young lawyer, has been hired by a firm in Wilmington, NC. Not her first choice, she is nevertheless consoled by the fact that her grandmother has left her a rather dilapidated beach house on Beryl Island. Moving onto the island, she is met by an old boyfriend from her childhood, Robert Malone, who had broken her heart at sixteen. Thinking he might have changed, she gives him a second chanceShe is amazed and captivated by a marine biologist, Chess Steadman, that's assigned to Beryl Island to work with loggerhead turtle nests. Also, there is Florence Hatley, a woman that runs a local antique store. She owns land on the northern part of the island near Bella's beach house. Florence wants to give that land as a sea turtle sanctuary at her aunt's request. The local government is pressuring with a long list of reasons for her to call it off. Meanwhile strange letters begin to arrive for Bella. Who has sent them? Why has it happened? And how do they arrive.
