Before the age of seven, Princess Linara, heiress to the throne of Kontahalin, lives through the death of her mother and the subsequent civil war which leads to the division of her people. The intelligentsia follow her uncle, Ishbathar, to the White Mountains in the Sky, where the city-kingdom of Brockenjor is eventually founded. Yet Linara holds her head high as she grows into the heiress apparent that her father knows she can be, even as she secretly hopes to one day meet a man who will be fit to rule Kontahalin by her side. Yet with the passing years, such an outcome seems less and less likely, even as the Chancellor's interest in her affairs becomes more apparent, and the attention of Jen'dak, the handsome Captain of Linara's personal Guard, can not be ignored. However, the sudden appearance of strangers in Kontahalin during Linara's twenty-eighth year adequately shifts perspectives. For the albinoid Outsider, Ingram of Tabalsgard, possesses a mind and a spirit which lead Linara to believe that, not only might he be the man to help revive her father's dying kingdom, he might be the man who will be able to possess her heart, as well.
