In the novella by Melinda Durward, when Mae Arrowood died, she woke up with a new identity: Karma. Unable to be seen or heard, Mae believes that, if she is able to expose the ones responsible for her death, she will be freed from this role. This pursuit leads her to Candace, the police chief's daughter who becomes the newest student at Mae's old school. While both girls go on the same path to solve Mae's case, Mae finds that she is more alive than she thought.
