The Series of Unfortunate Emotions presents 10 poems that each focus on an emotion. As I sat in the car one day, looking out the window and observing the calmness outside, it occurred to me that I felt weighted, but-as so often was the case-I could not explicitly say what was making me feel that way. This series is a dissection of both subtle and intense emotions that so often play a role in our lives and our sense of self, perhaps without us even being aware of them. In this series, the emotions are brought to life, so that they can be consulted and confronted, making it easier to understand past, present, and future dealings with them. As the series progresses, the darkness that is initially prevalent begins to retreat as more positive emotional interactions begin to shine through. Overall, the work is meant to be encouraging, helping readers understand-via an elongated personal anecdote-that no one is without pain and emotional challenges and that it is possible to embrace those emotions and restructure them in ways that are personally beneficial.
