This is a collection of accounts of the World War One battlefield experiences of three veterans and one battlefield nurse, told in their own words. Ethel Pierce: served as a nurse in a field hospital in Rouen, France. During her time there, between February 1918 and July 1919, she treated hundreds of veterans for wounds from shot, shell and gas, as well as those stricken as a result of the flu pandemic. She tells her story with humor and candor. Julius Daniels: an army combat engineer lieutenant with the 26th (Yankee) Division, serving on the battlefields of France from 1917 to 1919. His story is filled with human interest anecdotes as well as on-the-scene battle experiences. We travel with him across the Atlantic to England and France, through the battles of Chemin des Dames, Chateau Thierry, San Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne offensive. Charlie Twombley: an army infantry private in the 26th Division, he tells of his experiences of trench raids, "over the top" attacks against German machine gun, rifle and artillery fire, and the serious wounds he suffered on the battlefield. His story covers his voyage to France in 1917 to his trip back home in 1919, and the enormous parade on the streets of Boston. Warren Keith: served as an army infantry officer, commander of the 3rd Battalion, 321st Infantry Regiment, 81st (Wildcat) Division in France between 1918 and 1919. A multi-decorated veteran, his account includes the fierce attack on Grimaucourt, and the tragic last-day-of-the-war casualties, on the morning of November 11, 1918.
