As a once powerful Empire begins to descend into chaos and revolution, Jasper reluctantly leaves his magical studies to visit his aunt in the far-flung mining outpost of Feldivar. But danger is everywhere in the once-peaceful lands. With bandits on the roads and reports of marauders attacking and looting at will, Feldivar is no longer the tranquil mining settlement it once was. Jasper's proficiency with wind magic is soon put to the test when the caravan he is travelling with is ambushed in the desert and he has to use all his skills to escape. And when he finally reaches the community, he discovers that the Imperial garrison has already pulled out. Now Jasper finds himself in a desperate situation, fighting with sword and sorcery in a frantic bid to stay alive and protect the helpless villagers who now look to him as their shield. But Jasper has yet to face the most dangerous threat. It comes in the form of the mysterious passenger brought along with them, but who are they and what do they really want from him?
