Lizzie is a pregnant teenager in the fictitious town of Winshall, Kansas. One day, she goes missing. Helen, her former teacher and friend, is worried by her disappearance, though no one else in the community seems to care other than to gossip and judge. When she meets Lonnie, a friend of her father George, they strike a bond and seek to find Lizzie before the baby is due. George is a town patriarch, a respected former sheriff. He lives alone on the outskirts of town, happy to reminisce with friends but otherwise mind his own business. He lives with his parents, works a terrible job, and has no prospects. He begins acquainting himself with Stevie, a local drug dealer. However, one day his doorbell rings and his life changes forever.
