My Granny used to make homemade macaroni and cheese withbaked ham and serve up alongside advice like, "Stay away fromthat FAST LIFE! FAST cars, FAST Money, and FAST womenLater on in life, I killed a man in cold blood and later on criedwarm tears. It would be easy for society to place me in the category of theone in three incarcerated black men statistics commonly tossaround on the news. It is a partially accurate description. InWhips & Chains, I share the other important and oftenoverlooked pieces of my story. It is unique and at the same timea similar unspoken story to that of a lot of other humans in thesystem. I have been incarcerated since 2010 and am currentlyserving a 20 year to life sentence. My body may be locked up but my choices and expressing myvoice make me a free man. And honestly, there will be peoplereading this that are less free than me. I chose to be vulnerable and not hide parts of my story. My hopeis that it helps you feel like you don't need to hide any pieces ofyours. I believe in writing my experiences we can both be morecomfortable in seeing our differences, connecting in oursimilarities, and embrace the wisdom and opportunities forchange that will benefit everybody. Everyone on this planet has been shaped in some way by itsWhips & Chains.
