Some of the world's greatest speakers and writers are also great story tellers. Interesting observation and connection, isn't it?If you would become a great speaker, if you want to become a great writer, you need to deal effectively with storytelling. Hang out with smart people too. First of all, decide why you want to include or feature relevant stories in your presentation or written project. -Would they actually help you or enhance your message? -What do you want to accomplish and will stories add to that objective?-Which stories reinforce what you are trying to convey in your message?Why do stories work?-People like stories-People pay attention -People remember them-Stories can stimulate both sides of the brain-They can add humor-Stories can be used as a motivational tool If a picture is worth 1,000 words; at times, a properly placed and performed story is worth 10,000 words in the minds of your audience. Keep in mind the three basic STORY components: -The Premise-The Problem-The PayoffEach story has its own special use, placement, and characteristics. Learn to apply them where they are best suited to reinforce your message and help your audiences understand and retain your points. One of the most impactful techniques I've acquired from several coaches and professional speakers is: "Experience the story - don't just tell the story!"It is important to help the audience receive your story on all three levels: visually, audibly, and, at times in a kinesthetic manner. Being in-the-moment helps form realistic mental images and anchor them in the minds of your audience.
