Madame Bovary is the debut novel of French writer Gustave Flaubert, published in 1856.
The eponymous character lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. Emma has a highly romanticized view of the world and craves beauty, wealth, passion, as well as high society. It is the disparity between these romantic ideals and the realities of her country life that drive most of the novel, leading her into two affairs and to accrue an insurmountable amount of debt that eventually leads to her suicide. She lives a life of the mind, and it is her introspection and analysis of her internal conflicts that marks the psychological growth of Flaubert as an author.
When the novel was first serialized in Revue de Paris between 1 October 1856 and 15 December 1856, public prosecutors attacked the novel for obscenity. The resulting trial made the story notorious, and after Flaubert's acquittal, it became a bestseller.
