One of the earliest and satisfactory english detective novels, "the moonstone" by wilkie collins is unlike every other thriller you may ever examine. Lady rachel verinder gets a gift from her deceased uncle on her 18th birthday: the moonstone, a very huge, wonderful yellow diamond, whitch he stole from a shrine in india in the course of a navy operation. The diamond is supposedly cursed via the 3 clergymen who had been entrusted with its care. They comply with the moonstone, which travels with rachel's cousin franklin to england. On the night rachel gets the diamond, it's far stolen. A detective from scotland yard is called into the manor to investigate, however the clues are few, and anyone has a strong alibi.
