Domain Loss and Gain in Contemporary Terminology Studies
Domain Loss and Gain in Contemporary Terminology Studies
This book presents the reader with state-of-the-art insights into theoretical issues in terminology studies as well as many practical examples of domain loss and domain gain in a broad range of languages and contexts. The concept of domain loss originated in the Nordic countries in the 1990s and was picked up quickly in many language areas by linguists, the media, and politicians alike. Worries continue that there are domains in which it is impossible to communicate in one’s own language without the use of English terms – or terms closely resembling English models – and that this trend is on the rise.
However, some languages have been successful at creating their own terminologies in a number of domains. This book addresses both issues, along with separate sections exploring domain loss and gain in the EU context and the use of specialized languages in education and training. The book will be of interest to researchers, educators and students of linguistics – in particular terminology – and sociology, language and terminology planners, specialized language and language development.
