Ingeniously manipulating the conventions of the nineteenth century omniscient narrator and the clichés of the victorian novel, John Fowles has created a very brilliant book which on one hand tells a passionate love story and on the other offers a sharp reflection on the ultimate meaning of literature. This book was the inspiration for the celebrated film which starred Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons.
