This book discusses the ICU environment from a patient perspective. It elucidates the need for phenomenological inquiry in investigating the critical illness experience in ICU and beyond. It includes narratives of people from a phenomenological study that examined the experience of critical illness in ICU and after discharge in the context of Daily Sedation Interruption. The narratives are discussed with a conclusion that critical illness is a biographical disruption. Additionally, implications for practice, education and research are made.
