Topical application of drugs to the eye is the most popular and well-accepted route of administration in various eye disorders. The bioavailability of ophthalmic drugs is, however, very poor due to efficient protective mechanisms of the eye like blinking, baseline and reflex lachrymation, and drainage remove rapidly foreign substances, including drugs, from the surface of the eye. Ophthalmic drug delivery is one of the most interesting and challenging endeavors facing by the pharmaceutical scientist. The anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of the eye render this organ highly impervious to foreign substances. A significant challenge to the formulator is to circumvent the protective barriers of the eye without causing permanent tissue damage. Natural gums are often preferred to synthetic materials due to their non- toxicity, low-cost, and easy availability. The Pinari tree, Sterculia foetida has been well documented for the utility of its various parts. Sterculia foetida gum (SFG) gum is obtained from gummy exudates of stem bark of Sterculia foetida family: Sterculiaceae) and has not been exploited as ophthalmic use.
