Among the many challenges that college learners face, one of the most difficult may be the requirement to accomplish majority of their oral and written academic tasks not in their native language, but in a second language such as English However, it is also a reality that not all students struggle. Some learners are proof that it is possible to succeed in learning subject matter in a second language and do well academically. Many factors influence successful learning in a second language, and one potential factor is social influences. Clearly, social factors do not directly impact the learning process itself but instead affects the learner's motivation to learn. This work sheds light on the actual lived experiences of Filipino university students who are ESL learners as to the social influences that motivate them and thus contribute to their successful learning in a second language. Educators, linguists and psychologists would find this book a useful resource both for classroom application and for research purposes.
