While determinist models of childhood trauma have been highly influential in promoting many beneficial clinical and governmental approaches to child care in western countries, there have also been some detrimental effects, such as 'mother-blaming' for all or most childhood psychopathology, as well as reluctance by some male carers to be involved with young children. Current cognitive and biological advances should allow for a more clear understanding of child development, trauma and appropriate interventions.
