Poverty has been a perennial disaster before which humanity seems to be powerless. However, this does not imply giving up. It is for this reason that the current book attempts to show one way of combating poverty, namely commitment to the common good. My interest is to show how the poor and the rich alike can create the necessary conditions to dimish poverty. Hence our title: "Commitment to the Common Good: The Basis for Empowerment and Liberation of Poor People." My aim is to find out the preconditions which are necessary if the battle against poverty is to succeed. I suggest that commitment to the common good, enhanced by solidarity towards all, is an essential means to reduce poverty in the world. It is at this point that I consider the commitment to the common good as one of the preconditions to reach one's empowerment, liberation and fulfilment. However, to be effective, this commitment should also take into account access to justice and legal empwerment, human rights and virtue ethics. Yet it is not being suggested that such commitment will end poverty, but if it is vigorously pursued there is every chance that people's life will improve, particularly the life of the poor.
