Value Based Education with Special Reference to Ramayana K. Jaya Ramaiah

Ramayana is a great Indian epic. It is heroic and full of action with plenty of appeal for the popular mind. It is primarily ethical in content. It deals with a new set of values presented through concrete characters and situations. Its values live and move before the people. It is composed for the admonition of the people. It has exerted a significant influence in the nation?s emotional, aesthetic and moral life. On the theme of Ramayana, songs, ballads, plays, play-lets have been formulated. Even today, people sit, hear and watch these in rapt attention. They imbibe the Ramayanic values and carry them in their subconscious. Gradually, the epic values have been accepted as the valid code of conduct. That is why, we often here: ?One should behave as Rama did and not as Ravana?The present fifth and final chapter attempts in the first part to bring forth the salient features of value based education that existed in Ramayana period and in the second part to present how it can solve some of the problems in the present day Indian educational system.
