Sunni Ducayne's story begins when she is 8 years old. She doesn't have the best Mama; Mama is neglectful, selfish, and unpredictable. Daddy is a famous rock star, who is often away and blissfully ignorant of life at home. After Daddy finds out he is not Sunni's real father, Mama leaves and takes Sunni with her on a harrowing journey, exposing her to a transient lifestyle and dangerous people. Mama has no plan and no means to support herself and Sunni. They travel with no real destination, staying with whoever will have them; friends or strangers. They sleep in spare rooms, on couches, in the car, and wherever else they can find. Sunni misses her Daddy and tries desperately to reconnect with him any way she can. Mama tends to abandon Sunni for days or weeks at a time, but Mama always comes back...until she doesn't. How will Sunni cope without her? How does her upbringing affect her? Will she inherit Mama's dysfunctional ways? And where is Mama? Sunni grows up alongside Mama's chaotic lifestyle, and is forever changed by her experiences. As an adult, Sunni struggles to connect with others, fights the urge to constantly run, and attempts to navigate life and relationships. Sunni tells her heart-wrenching story in her own words. We view the world through her eyes, as we follow her from an unfortunate and deprived childhood, into adulthood, as she tries to survive and thrive despite Mama's legacy.
