It is the early 1950s in Manchester, England. Flo and Alice, now in their late 30s have been best friends since their late 'teens' Former employers of Flo, who own a Guest House on the south side of Manchester, are about to embark on a four-week cruise, when their housekeeper and her husband are run over by a bus, resulting in a broken leg apiece and all the passengers getting home late for their tea. Turning, in desperation to their trusted former employee, as, it's impossible to get a refund at such short notice, and one of them knows, that this is to be their last ever holiday together, Flo is made an offer that's hard to refuse, a generous sum, cash in hand, more than enough to buy a Twin-tub and soap powder for it.
