Al-Fathiha Shofi Ahmed

This is an in-depth exegesis of Al-Fathiha, the first surah of the Qur'an. Al-Fathiha, the opening of the Qur'an, is merely 25 words in length, but the author provides upwards of 100 pages of explanation and interpretation of this sacred text, and it is clear that an infinite amount of ink could be spilled over the 113 letters of Al-Fathiha. The author explains to us the significance of each of Al-Fathiha's seven verses. We learn of the infinite mercy of Allah (SWT), to whom all praise is due, as He is the Lord of the Day of Judgement. We learn of the Siratum Mustakim, the "Straight Path," upon which we all should tread but which remains undefined to us. We learn of the significance of humanity, for it is upon humans that Allah (SWT) has bestowed His favour, and from His favour we may learn how to follow the straight path. The author of this exegesis does not only unwrap each individual word of the surah, but also enlightens us as to the significance of Al-Fathiha's brevity and simplicity, it's numerological significance, and the importance of discovering and following the Siratum Mustakim for all people in daily life. We learn of Al-Fathiha's literary perfection: in just 25 words, Al-Fathiha both opens and encompasses the entirety of the Qur'an. It is an introduction, a prayer, and a summary alike. In its simplicity and precision, Al-Fathiha serves as an apt role model for communication. Any media personnel or executive seeking to appeal to their audience quickly and effectively would do well to read Al-Fathiha and this exegesis alongside it. We also learn of the importance of the Siratum Mustakim to all people, both to celebrities and politicians and to the average reader. We learn that it is the path followed by those whom Allah (SWT) favours, and it is the path upon which they must remain. Although it is impossible to match the kindness of He who is most merciful, the Lord of the worlds, we-his most favoured creations-must take Him as our model of ultimate kindness, beneficence, and mercy. Through Al-Fathiha and through this exegetical text, we learn that we must be kind to ourselves, merciful to others, and generous to all of the creations of Allah (SWT). In a world of increasing violence and climatological catastrophe, we must be ever-more rigorous in our kindness to our fellow man and stewardship of our environment, for all of it has been provided by the love and mercy of the Lord of the universe.
