In the book, Nate Connor - The Secrets of Nakagusuku Castle, Nate departs with his family for the island of Okinawa, Japan. It takes a while for Nate and his younger brother, Ricky, to adapt to this foreign place. Ultimately, they meet Toshiko, a girl who grew up understanding the Ryukyuan culture. Together, they set off for a bicycle trip to the ruins of Nakagusuku Castle, only to be followed by a villainous gang of Stealy Boys. Adding to the threat of this hot pursuit, the group encounters a series of shady activities surrounding the castle, most notably an evil zoo, where exotic animals are mistreated in horrendous confinement.
