In the book, Nate Connor - Tollwut!, Nate is a foreign exchange student staying with a family in an ancient castle in western Germany. As he eagerly adapts to the German culture Nate is befriended by Thorston and Sandra. Together they discover that there is something terribly wrong in the castle and the surrounding farming village of Gauersheim. The three are determined to explore the reasons behind a recent rat infestation in the small town, with subsequent cases of rabies (As the title depicts, Tollwut is the German word for rabies); but what begins as an innocent undercover investigation, gets them in deep trouble with the dark and suspicious castle caretaker, Bruno.
