Social Symbolism in Ancient & Tribal Art Edmund Carpenter

10. Vol. 3, Book 1 - Rebirth: Cosmic Games

As Volumes One and Two establish the premise and breadth of genealogical pattern making, Volume Three provides examples of the complex mythological narratives employed through such designs. Each book examines different categories of these patterns. Book One, Rebirth: Cosmic Games, is Carpenter's review of a variety of the performative aspects of tribal consciousness. He examines continuous-line drawings, noting their musical connotations, and describes a wide range of examples as thresholds between terrestrial and spiritual worlds. Chapters include: Anthropomorphic Gaming Boards, Divination Boards, Gods at Play, Hopscotch, Climbing to Heaven, etc.
