Condemned by written history as a barbarian horde, soaked in blood and no redeeming characteristics, a reputation rehabilitated by archaeological finds that show some of their true history, but the family sagas already knew the truth. Einaar and Gudhrun were of a people who developed advanced shipbuilding and great navigational skills, were expert traders who traveled across and beyond the known world, where the captains of their ships were chosen for their skills and success, their courage and their wisdom. For them raiding was simply the continuation of negotiating trade beyond the others' intransigence, no was an unacceptable answer. They had a love of colours and silver, a creativity and clothes that reflected the distance of their journeys and their eagerness to learn new things. The Saga is told by the narrator to his grandchildren around the winter hearth, six hundred years, later in equally testing times when the family faces new dangers and new opportunities.
