The book follows the story of the three cohorts from Britannia who participated in all the wars of conquest of the Dacian Kingdom.

These men from Caledonia find themselves thrust in a conflict against a people of which sense of honour and love for freedom resembled so much their own. However, an oath sworn to the Roman Empire must be kept and by the end of the wars they are decorated by Emperor Trajan and rewarded with transfer to the reserve before the expiration of a full military service, an honour and prestige not gained lightly and by so very few.
