It was a dark day for Joel Miller and his wife when the community decided to shun them. All the money that Bishop Alderman had gotten for his cow was gone, and Joel Miller had been the thief. That's what the bishop believed, and although Joel claimed he had nothing to do with the theft, judgment was swift and harsh. He and his wife were to leave. But Joel had a lovely daughter, and he couldn't stand the thought that his impressionable child would have to face the ugliness of the world outside the community.
