"Trying to deal with you is like trying to keep up with the wind. It's not hard to tell where you've been, but impossible to know where you're going," he complained.

"Is that a compliment or an insult?" I demanded.

"Darned if I know," returned Jeremy ruefully. "You definitely give a fellow a hectic existence."

"Pot calling the kettle black, aren't you?"

He stared. "What are you talking about?"

"Seems to me, you're creating quite an unsettling state of affairs for yourself. Care to talk about it?"

He emptied his cup in one gulp. "Really, Kitty, you make it sound like I can't handle my own affairs."

Realizing that he wouldn't confide in me, I rose to go. "It's not the handling I'm concerned about, Jeremy, as well you know. However, I'll respect your reticence, but remember, no give from you, no more give from me." Pulling on my gloves, I stalked to the door.

Jeremy barred my way. "Blackmailer!" he hissed.

I eyed him stonily. "It won't work."







Who would have thought that visiting her cousin, Agnes, would be the catalyst of a new life? Certainly not Kitty O'Neill, but the loss of her trunk, little money and the temporary absence of her relatives, forces her to abandon the lifestyle she has known and become a working girl.

In an impetuous moment, Kitty's errant tongue and friendly heart pitch fork her into the paths of malicious gossipers. Endeavoring to right at least some of her wrongs, she becomes the prime target of an unknown assassin known only as 'Chad'.

Trying to keep any disastrous news from her family only complicates matters. Add in appalling weather and things go from bad to worse.

Her status and reputation in ruins, and desperate to extricate herself and those around her from death and disaster, Kitty unexpectedly finds help in the most handsome man she has ever seen. That he is also the most obnoxious, persistent and provoking man, intent in embroiling her in his schemes, does not prevent her from falling in love. Fortunately, he also has the remedy for her troubles.
