What's Missing at the Heart of Our Homes?In my studies about what others are doing to teach Judeo-Christian values about the family, I've found that there are too few sites and people who are promoting what I think is the most important thing about Christian parenting. You look at most of these books, classes, websites - some of them are free, some of them you pay for - and almost all of them boil down to this premise: "If you do things exactly as we say, you'll raise good kids and be a successful parent." The problem is that real life doesn't work that way, nor is it what the Bible teaches. With that in mind, I wrote this book to share my views. I think that there's something wrong at the root of many of our homes. You get to be the ultimate judge for your own life and your own family, of course, but I hope that you will hear me out. If you think I am wrong, feel free to correct me. I believe that there are two basic ways of looking at raising and leading a family: what we do versus who we are. Though the distinction seems small, it is anything but. It's the difference between getting our kids to behave versus being godly parents. The former is focused on doing the correct thing in the correct order and getting them to do the correct thing when we want them to. The latter is focused on looking in the mirror and making sure that who we are is a functioning, healthy person for them to follow in the first place. Which do you think is easier? Which do you think most people are more interested in doing? There are no guarantees that good parents will always produce good children. However, the odds are in favor of those who wisely examine themselves and the environment they are producing for those children."-Dr. Rick Janelle
