In his evening college art class, Garret meets Stella, the girl of his dreams. Within a year he gets drafted and married. Together, they move into an off-base apartment in Alexandra, Virginia to start their marriage. Over the years, Garret and Stella must negotiate the complications of Army hierarchy, substandard housing, fluctuating finances, job losses, earning a postgrad degree, European travel, starting businesses, paying mortgages, raising two children - yet all the while taking time to celebrate the magical moments in life.
