Invariably at some point someone asks, "how did you two meet?" There are two answers. The short version, which details where you met and under what circumstances. Or the long version, which is what this book is all about, answering the question by going back to the beginning. It is a saga three hundred years in the making. Two brave men and their families make their way from France and England, one landing on the shores of New France, the other on the shores of New England. Each setting down roots that spread through a dozen generations and hundreds of family members, until a branch of each family ends up in Barrington, Illinois, where the two subjects of this story meet. It is a tale of hard working immigrants who make their way in the New World, passing down to each generation their love of family, their determination to persevere through hardship, and their celebration of success. Placed in their historical context, the author recreates their lives and tells their story based on his research in the primary records, and, where the trail of evidence runs thin, making his best guess as to what happened. This is the story of everyone. A story we all share in some way. We are the sum total of all of our ancestors decisions and actions before us, ending up placing us in a time and place not of our choosing. This is the story of us.
