10 REASONS TO MEMORIZE THE SCRIPTURE Dallas Willard, professor of Philosophy at the University of Southern California, wrote, "Bible memorization is absolutely fundamental to spiritual formation. If I had to choose between all the disciplines of the spiritual life, I would choose Bible memorization, because it is a fundamental way of filling our minds with what it needs. The Pastor Chuck Swindoll also wrote, "I know of no other single practice in the Christian life more rewarding, practically speaking, than memorizing Scripture. . . Luther knew so much of the Bible from memory and that is why the Lord opened his eyes to see the truth of justification in Romans 1:17. Here are some important reasons we should memorize the Scripture: 1. Bible Memorization leads to being conform to Christ. Paul wrote that "we all, . . . beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another" (2 Corinthians 3:18). 2. Scripture Memorization helps us to triumph over Sin. "I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you" (Psalm 119:9, 11). Paul said that we must "by the Spirit . . . put to death the sinful deeds of the body" (Romans 8:13). 3. Bible Memorization leads us to triumph over Satan. When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, he recited Scripture from memory and put Satan to flight (Matthew 4:1-11). 4. Bible Memorization helps us to communicate the Gospel to Unbelievers. Proverbs 25:11 When the heart full of God's love can draw on the mind full of God's word, timely blessings flow from the mouth. 6. Bible Memorization brings us to Commune with God in his Person and Ways. Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. John 14:23 7. Bible Memorization helps us to grow in the knowledge of God: of who He is, what He's promised, and who we in Christ But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. (2 Peter 3:18 ) 8. Bible Memorization equips us to rightly handle the headaches and heartaches of life. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. 9. It supplies us with wisdom to make the best possible choices on any given day. "Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long". Psalm 119:97 10. It helps us to think about the excellent and praiseworthy "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things".
