Complexity theory has developed powerful new ways of thinking about systematic relations, including the nature of systems and of change. These are of use to Sociology, especially as it grapples with the nature of the connections and changes involved in the process of globalization. Complexity theory facilitates the development of general social theory as well as the explanation of specific contextual occurrences. It is a resource for Sociology, by offering concepts developed for analysis in parallel but not identical contexts, rather than a set of definitive constructs. Complexity theory is consistent with the classical Sociological heritage, though processes of interpretation are required in order to translate concepts into those relevant for Sociology.
