During the dark ages of the second Kingdom, the Chancel Knights are the rich bankers and military order of the Santa Sede, the executive council of the People's Church. King Maggul Margrave of the Kingdom of Theriswen owes the Chancel Knights a great deal of money. At the behest of his court magician, Regent Warlton, the King charges the Chancel Knights with heresy and arrests them all in a single day. He tortures them but none reveals the location of the Order's treasure. Sir Reynol deCrewe is a champion knight that takes the vows of the Order just before their Grand Master burns at the stake. He vows to find the treasure and build an army to overthrow the evil King and his Regent. Sir Reynol seeks the help of the mysterious underground and transparent-skinned people, 'The Lumens, ' to forestall Warlton's pursuit of the treasure. Reynol also falls in love with the beautiful Lady Bessa Schenk that reveals to Reynol the Lumen's secret disguise that allows them free access in the surface world of the Alluvia. Rebels within the Lumen Underworld plan to take their superior weapons technology and overtake the surface world. Sir Reynol deCrewe and Lady Bessa Schenk must work together to end the King's plot and Regent's separate plot to overtake the world. Will they succeed before it's too late?
