In the twelfth century Barcelona, John Roses tells the story of his father, Marc. It is the time of King James I, who spent his life conquering Muslim territories and laid the foundations of Barcelona as a great city dedicated to commerce in the Mediterranean Sea. Marc Roses is the cook of a hostel on Broad Street, a family inn, and is in love with Ada, but his rival, Mau de Riera i del Tesor, who is the son of an important Baron, falsely accuses him of a series of horrible murders. Pau Faner is a Minorcan writer born and living in the Balearic Islands, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, the old Mare Nostrum of the Romans. He has published about forty narrative works -novels and short stories- and won the best literary awards in his country.
